Happy Oil Dependence Day!!! This time last year oil was priced just above 70 dollars a barrel. I never would have guessed that the price of oil would have risen to double its price in just one year, but it sure has. In fact, it’s risen more than 50 dollars a barrel in the past six months; it just seems like there’s no end in sight. So how does this affect the Fourth of July weekend? The gurus and soothsayers on TV got it wrong again. Just when things were getting good and it was time to talk “buy, buy, buy,” we have the first weekly loss in a month. The Dow ($INDU) fell 120.90 points to close the session at 12,745.88. The S&P 500 ($SPX) lost 9.40 points, closing at 1,388.28. The NASDAQ ($COMPQ) gave up 5.72 points to 2,445.52. So what caused the markets to lose ground this week?

Chalk up another crazy week... For those that were asleep or too nervous to even turn on the television, the markets were mixed again this week. The DJIA opened the week at 12,348.21 and closed at 12,381.02 for a 32.81 gain or 0.3 %. The S&P 500 had similar results opening at 1349.99, closing the week at 1353.11 for a 0.2 % gain. Only the NASDAQ lost this week, opening at 2321.80 and closing at 2303.35 for a loss of -0.8 %.
